Question by Lynae: I don’t have a thermometer to check temperature or vegetables to cook on, How do I cook a turkey in the oven?
All I have is a aluminum pan, butter, and an oven bag. The turkey weighs 13.50 lbs.

Answer by Katie
Ok – if you are doing a stuffed turkey (I prefer not to use the bags) you should cook it at 325 degrees for the weight that you have – for 3 1/2 to 4 hours.
If it is not stuffed, then you should cook it at 325 degrees for 3 to 3 hours and 45 minutes.
If you do not use the bag, baste often (I start out with about 1/4 inch of chicken broth in the bottom of the pan to start basting with) – cover top with foil, remove the foil about 30 minutes prior to the end of cooking time to allow to brown the top to a golden brown!!! Hope this helps!

Question by Someone: How can I tell if my turkey is done if I dont have a thermometer?

shoot tell that to my mom not me!

    i’m not cooking it sheesh.

    Answer by Dave C
My advice is to go out and spend about for a digital thermometer.

There are ways to tell, but the indicators usually happen when the turkey is overdone.

Some indicators are… If the drumstick bone comes out, you’re definitely done.
    1. Turkey legs are loss and easy to pull.
    2. Take a toothpick and poke the thigh, if the juice comes out clear, you’re done.

    Edit…
Also, will the bird be stuffed or unstuffed?
If stuffed, I highly recommend some type of thermometer to check the stuffing… You don’t want people to get sick due to the stuffing.

Question by ineedhelp: Can I cook an 8kg turkey safely without a thermometer?
I bought a turkey, thinking I was so brave to try cooking one for the first time. It is 8kg. I didn’t buy a thermometer though, and reading several online sites, it seems I should have. Can I get by without one though? It is suppose to snow some more and I’m already stuck from the last one…
      actually it is 4.245 kg…aka 9.35 lbs

The juices should run clear from the bird and you should be able to move the leg and thigh easily. Check for a pop up button in the bird, many come with them (although they aren’t perfect)

          Turkey cooking questions….?

Question by technologic80: Turkey cooking questions….?
I have a 20lb turkey that I have cooking at 325F in an oven pan. I slathered it with butter and covered it with foil.

          My question(s) are:
1.) I removed the giblet bag and tossed it (yuck!). I didnt look for a neck.. does that mean Im cooking a neck inside the turkey and should’ve taken it out? I didnt see anything in there but it was slightly frozen in the middle?

2.) Im cooking at 325F. My digital meat thermometer that I stuck in the breast reads 33F after cooking for 29 minutes…LOL. Is it ok for me to kick it up to 350F?

Ive cooked a turkey every year since I moved out (2002) but I always forget this stuff and am frantically searching the internet every year…lol. My first year I left the giblet back in the turkey by mistake. Turns out its a common rookie mistake.
Thanks guys. I increased the temperature to 350F, and the turkeys internal temperature is rising! 36F now. lol, the simple things in life to get excited about, haha.

Also, I suppose if the turkey next is inside like somebody posted, I could always pull it out when I take the foil off to brown in during the last hour or so. Or I could always just leave it in and take it out after its done.
Thanks everybody and have a GREAT Thanksgiving :-)
Its now at 38F according to my meat thermometer.

To the poster who wanted me to eat the neck – how about you come over and pick the neck up when its done – around 3pm or so, I will save it for you…LOL

And I did increase the temperature to 350F. Thanks for helping me with that!

A neck … not sure. I don’t do the cleaning part.

          No, leave it at 325.

If you cleaned out the entire cavity, you should be fine.

            Okay, Let’s Talk Turkey?

Question by Kelly R: Okay, Let’s Talk Turkey?
Okay, the background info: My boyriend and I celebrate Christmas after the 25th because it is SO much easier on the wallets. We wake up, we have mimosas and open stockings, have breakfast, open gifts, christmas music. . .oh, and of course: The Turkey. I always do a big, thanksgiving-like meal for our christmas dinner.

Here’s the thing, i’ve never really gotten the turkey quite right, or the way i want it. I’ve looked around to many soucres, but everyone has something different to say: Tent it; Use a covered pan; Don’t cover the turkey; Bake at 375; Preheat to 475 and bake for 20min then turn down to 250 and….. you get the idea. I know everyone has their own way, BUT I WANT TO KNOW THE BEST WAY!

Here’s the facts: I have a 6.7lb oven roaster turkey, I have 2 disposable aluminum pans which are pretty flimsy, I have tin foil, I have a meat thermometer and I have a turkey baster. I am willing to buy a sturdy oven pan with a top if i need to. I also have a pyrex dish, 9×13 and a 2nd a bit smaller…..hmm, could i put it in the 9×13 pyrex and tent it???

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW– what to cook the turkey in, how to season it, covered or uncovered(or a bit of both) and at what temperature the bird needs to be at. Any advice is appreciated. I don’t care if someone has answered the question already or not….IF YOU HAVE INPUT, plz SPEAK UP! I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR ITt. A thumbs up for anyone who helps me out with this.

With all of the havoc this holiday amongst myself, family and friends, its been killer. If i could nail this dish, it would undoubtedly make my “post-christmas” celebration.

*please be specific. write it to me like you’re explaining it to an idiot~ the more detail, the better*

Thanks for helping me make Christmas that much better,

            With Love,
            Kelly in Queens<3

Answer by *I have to Tink about it*
            Here’s what I do…I don’t know if it’s the best, but it’s really good.

I season it with salt, pepper and poultry seasoning. (Mixed first)
I put Real butter inside the cavity with 3 bay leaves. Butter on the outside and under the skin.
I cook it in an aluminum roasting pan with carrots, celery and garlic cloves on the bottom.
I tent it and cook it for 8-10 hours @ 225 and then remove the foil and cook @ 325 for 30 mins.
If your trying new ways, try this and see how you like it. :)

              Is my turkey done cooking?

Question by I ♥ Guinea Pigs!: Is my turkey done cooking?
My mom cooked our turkey for 1 hour at 450, then she lowered the heat to 325 and cooked it for 4 more hours.

We have a 21 lb. turkey (yes, big!) but when we took the stuffing out the inside is dark pinkish, but my mom said that’s just the dark meat part. We put the meat thermometer in it, and it said 160 F. The little red timer on the turkey has popped up though, and the outside of the turkey is dark golden brown and dark brown on other parts.

              Is it finished cooking?
When I said 450 and 325 I meant in Fahrenheit.

                HELP! Making a turkey breast!?

Question by SunnyDelight: HELP! Making a turkey breast!?
I am making a turkey breast for my family’s late Thanksgiving.
                I’ve never done this before.

I rubbed some butter on the outside. I was going to use oil but the thought of an oil fire scared me. lol.

I sprinkled some pepper on. Put it in a 325 degree oven (that is what the package said to do)

I was going to take it out at 25 minute intervals and rub more butter on so the skin doesn’t get dry, and then put the meat thermometer in it (It can be cooked from frozen state, so the thermometer doesn’t go in at the moment)

                Is this right?

                Did I do anything wrong?

Approximately how long should it cook for? (I know until the temp gets to 170 degrees F) I am cooking other things and need a rough estimate of when to start them. It is frozen, and no more than 5 pounds.
This isn’t out first Thanksgiving, but the first I’ll be cooking for. I want to do it right. :)

                Thanks!!!
Also, can I use chicken broth? To cover it and put some in the bottom of the roasting pan?

                Will it taste funny?

I just really don’t want it to be dry. And butter is SO fattening.

                  why isn’t my turkey cooking?

Question by Dawg: why isn’t my turkey cooking?
I have a 15 lb. turkey, I put it in a cooking bag and cooked it according to the instructions, but when the time was up it was brown on the outside but not done inside. I didn’t put the meat thermometer into the bird before putting it into the oven, but I did put one in when I put it back into the oven to cook further. The meat on the legs seems to be pulling away from the bone, but the legs do not move easily and the juices do not run clear. I would like to turn the bird over, so some of the juices come back into the breast so it doesn’t dry out, but at this point, I just don’t know.

                  Answer by Betty
Sounds like its cooked to me. What is the internal temperature? The internal temperature should be 165 F. The temperature of the bird will determine if its cooked.

                    Was this turkey cooked alright?

Question by neato1975: Was this turkey cooked alright?
I roasted a 20 lbs, unstuffed turkey for 5.5 hours @325. At that point the pop- up timer had come up. I *tried* to use my meat thermometer, but the glass cracked, fell out and the indicator came off…it was at 160-something just prior. Everything looked cooked, juices ran clear, etc. It wasn’t until after eating and removing the thighs that I became concerned…that meat all looked okay, but in the joint, the juice was reddish. What do you think, was it okay or did I just send my family home with food poisoning???

                    Best answer:

                    Answer by TessaK
They will be fine, though I suggest not eating those areas of the turkey. The joint is the indicator of if the turkey is cooked properly and if the juices are pinkish then it usually means it isn’t *completely* done.
