Question by AFx567: Are the maximum and minimum thermometers always found together to make a Six’s thermometer?
Or can they be used separately?
Thanks
Best answer:
Answer by tentofield Most maximum and minimum thermometers are separate thermometers, certainly the ones found in thermometer screens are.
A maximum thermometer is a mercury in glass thermometer with a constriction in the mercury tube above the bulb – like a clinical thermometer. The mercury moves up the tube as the temperature rises but when it cools, the mercury cannot go back past the constriction and the maximum temperature can be read. The thermometer is then shaken to get the mercury back into the bulb.
A minimum thermometer is an alcohol in glass thermometer using colourless alcohol. Inside the alcohol column is a movable shunt called an index. As the temperature falls, the index is pulled down the thermometer by the surface tension of the alcohol. When the temperature rises, the index stays where it is and the minimum temperature can be read from its position. After reading the thermometer is tilted so the index runs back to the top of the alcohol column.
The thermometers are housed in the thermometer screen almost horizontally but with the bulb slightly downwards,

Answer by dodger i would try somewhere like home depot or some home utility place. i am pretty sure they would have what you are looking for.
… you could also try a pet store. they have fish tanks there and should carry thermometers in order to monitor the temperature.
Question by jon.s: Are meat thermometers the same as human thermometers?
Best answer:
Answer by Betty No. A high quality digital or analog kitchen/meat thermometer is designed to be used on food, not people. The old fashioned people thermometers that are made of glass with mercury in them would be dangerous to use on meat because they would probably break.
The newer kind of people thermometers that they stick in your ear probably don’t have a high enough reading…. so they wouldn’t be very accurate.
Question by Wisdom: Meat thermometers: digital vs analog?
I need to get a new meat thermometer. Anyhow, I was planning on getting a digital thermometer but I’ve read that many of them are not accurate, plus many of them end up breaking shortly after they are purchased.
Anyhow, what are you opinions?
Best answer:
Answer by Dave C If I were to get one… I’d go digital with a higher heat range so I could use it to deep fry as well as check meat doneness.
I have both and like both.
Digital thermometers are easier to read while dial thermometers I have a tougher time reading the graduations, especially know that I have to get bifocals.
You can always test the “accuracy” by measuring the temperature of boiling water.
The downside of digital is that it won’t work if the batteries die. Analog will work, my pref are dial thermometers, and don’t need batteries.
I’ve never had a digital break on me… I’ve been using the same one for 2 years… actually, it my first and only digital.

Question by Justin H: Any recommendations for wireless meat thermometers?
I’m mainly looking for one to use in my oven indoors, but I want it to be usable on the grill as well. There are so many different brands to choose from, I was hoping for some input to make a decision.
Just to clarify, I’m looking for one that I can leave in the meat while it’s in the oven and an alarm will go off when it’s at the right temp.
I’m looking for recommendations of specific brands and/or models.

Answer by AMH …And you thought you might get an answer in the Vegetarian section of Yahoo Answers…?
It’s probably a joke question, but you can try Target. If you want high-quality, see if there is a Sur La Table or other cooking specialty store nearby.

Question by David Dickerman: How do meat thermometers work?
What is inside them and what is their mechanism?
Best answer:
Answer by Wisdom Cube They’re electrical thermometers. A piece of metal heats up, and the device runs a current through it and measures its resistance. Hotter metals have a higher electrical resistance, so measuring the resistance allows you to somewhat accurately determine the temperature.

Question by epic_laydown: are there any meat thermometers that instantly take the temperature?
i’ve only seen the ones that slowly take it..you have ot leave it in the meat for a few minutes. Thanks!

Answer by jenonner I got one for Christmas that you can leave in the meat the entire times it’s cooking. Then you put the digital readout part outside the oven. I think my parents got it for me at Linens and Things and it wasn’t too expensive either. It has a warning buzzer on it when it’s starts getting close to the right temperature and you set it for pork, chicken, beef, etc.
