Question by Elizabeth: Can you take your own temperature with a meat thermometer?
Can you take it under your tongue like you would do with a normal thermometer?
Best answer:
Answer by dubdshaw
You can but it hurts. Also, it is less accurate if you get it all the way to the bone. If you touch it directly to bone, it will affect your reading drastically.

Throw the candy thermometer out. otherwise the mercury might get into the food.
You can use the meat thermometer if it has a large enough temperature range to check the right temp for your yogurt.

On the outside of the case it should have the temperature range. Most of them do go to 220F. I know the one I have allows for calibration with boiling and ice water.

They measure the same thing but a meat thermometer would have a different range. For example a fervor thermometer needs to be very accurate between about 90 and 110 (F) whereas a meat thermometer is usually interested in much higher temperatures typically around 140-180 (F).

Question by Jessica Wilson: How to know if meat is undercooked?
I made some Chorizo for the first time about 20 minutes ago and I think it was under cooked. I’m not sure if it is though, because it’s the first time I’ve ever cooked it. It’s a bit pinkish/red on the inside but the outside is burnt. I’ve eaten about 2/3 of the sandwich but it started making me sick so I stopped. So how can I tell if it is undercooked. And I don’t have a thermometer of any sort, so please nothing about taking the meats temp.
Best answer:
Answer by Tinana
Because it was pink on the inside it may have been slightly undercooked. But don’t worry about it making you sick. People think if there’s pink in their chicken or pork, it’s gonna make them sick, but thats a long time ago that would happen. As long as you’re not extremely elderly with a weak immune system, you’ll be fine. I always undercook my meat, just because I don’t like it dry

Question by Ghert qux: Question about undercooked meat?
I did some reading about undercooked meat. I’m concerned because I don’t have a thermometer to measure the internal Temperature of the meat I cook. I usually just overcook the meat to insure it’s done but people suggest to be safe make sure it’s fully cooked. Example: I leave chicken in the oven for a very long time and don’t eat it until I’m satisfied with it.
How do you actually know something is fully cooked if you don’t have a way to test the internial tempauture of the meat?
The color of ground beef does not indicate it’s fully cooked, this is because beef can actually be a brown color in a raw state.

One trick I use is the color of the juices produced when you press the meat. It should be without blood.

Question by kerosine13: How do I read my Good Cook meat thermometer? Red or black hand on the dial?
I have a Good Cook meat thermometer. The “dial” is like a compass, with one side of the pointer being red and one side being black. One side of the thermometer has temperatures and the other has a spectrum showing “pork, poultry” etc. It is confusing – which one is for which side? Is the red dial for the numbers side or the meat/doneness side? I can’t find any directions online. Does anyone know?
Best answer:
Answer by Lyin’ Buzzard
The red is for the temperature.

Question by xyz87: why carnivores never get sick eating raw meat?
carnivores like bear, tiger, lion, croc etc etc eat raw meat. Raw meat has too many germs and infections inside — like e.coli and many other pathogens. If human eat raw meat, they will fall very ill right away. Often we humans ensure meat is cooked at right temperature for safety and some use thermometers too to check temperature. But how come these beasts are still healthy after eating so much raw meat?
