Question by french kitty: Will a 1200 degree infrared thermometer be hot enough to measure a wood campfire?
I am doing a science fair project on burning wood in different set ups to see which produces the most heat and im thinking of buying an infrared thermometer that reaches 1200 degrees F. will that be enough to properly and accurately record the temprature? My fires are usually an opaque light orange with a small flicker of blue at the base of the flame.

    Answer by gintable
IT isn’t about the thermometer being hot. Infrared thermometers don’t actually have a physical probe reaching the temperature they measure, they use Wien’s law to relate most abundant frequency to temperature of the emitter.

It is about the infrared radiation detector having enough capability of frequency measurement.

That visible color of orange flames is only the “tip of the iceberg” of a black body radiation spectrum. The majority of it is infrared.

All thermometers measure temperature. They differ in how much infrared they absorb, but his experiment specifies that you paint the sensing end of the thermometer black, so that this difference is eliminated. Any thermometer with a similar sized sensing tip will work.

Question by rob: can i use a regular infrared light for my snake or will it be to light at night?
ive been useing a regular infrared light all the time for my snake(ball python) its extremely powerful but i keep it far enuff away that the thermometer at the botton never goes below 85 or over 90 but he doesnt like to come out of his hide even at night when the regular light is off i got one of those 100 watt ones you get from the pet store with the darker red tint but it does not keep his tank warm enuff so i switched back to the industrial one i was just wondering if im giving him 24 hour light by useing this one do i need to get a night light specific infrared or will any work at night

As long as the watts are correct, you can use an infrared. Snakes can’t see that light, so it will give the snake a realistic sense of day and night. Good luck!

Question by rob: am i useing an infrared thats to powerful for my snake?
the infrared light i have is at least 250 watts probly like 500 or so tho(its old and has no labels besides infrared heat emitter and its pretty big about 2.5 times the size of a regular bulb if you put your hand an inch infront it will be way too hot to stand in seconds) i keep it a few feet above his tank and the thermometer towards the bottom never gets warmer than 90 usually about 85-88 but will this burn his skin even though its not too hot in the tank i read 100-150 watts for the 30 gallon i have a 100 watt and the tank will drop to about 75 with this directly ontop of the screen it drops to like 67 at night so i stopped useing it the 2nd day i had it

I use a UTH heater attached to a themorsstat on the bottom of the tank, and a 40 or 50 watt red bulb to make a hot spot and thats on a dimmer to make it about 50% power.

250-500 in my opinion will be way to hot for a snake. It really doesnt matter what the wattage is that is not what you measure. the important part is the temps in the tank, both air and floor temps. I suggest you get a stick on wall themometers to measure the air teams, and an infrared themometer (less the 20$) to measure the floor temps.
