Question by Bethany: What’s the difference between a candy thermometer and a regular food one?
Can a regular one be used as a candy thermometer?

Best answer:

Answer by PhilbertFlange
Candy thermometers have a very large range, and have very precise measurements (usually by 5 degree increments as opposed to 10).

Unless you have a regular thermometer that can go into a deep fryer (which candy thermometers can do, as they double as deep fryer thermometers if you’re making a deep fryer out of a pot and oil), I would recommend going and buying on just to be safe. Candy thermometers usually only run a few bucks for the non fancy ones.

No. There is just one “meat thermometer” used for all meats. However every kind of meat needs to be cooked do a different temperature. Now there is a difference in a candy thermometer and a meat thermometer.
Here is a meat cooking temperature guide so you can check whatever meat you are cooking. Add it to your favorites for future use:

Always stick the thermometer in the thickest part of the meat and don’t let it touch the bone for an accurate reading.

Question by Forest of Flesh: What’s the difference between candy thermometer and regular instant thermometer?
I was looking at some cooking thermometer at target and I can’t find any candy thermometer. They only have the instant ones and a deep fry one. Does one really have to have a candy thermometer for candy making?

      Best answer:

      Answer by Lydon
With a regular instant thermometer you have a probe that is used to push into the food (usually meat) to give a quick temperature, then the probe is pulled from the food.

Candy thermometers are generally designed to be kept in the food (in this case candy) so they will usually clip to the side of the pan for a constant reading.

The fry thermometer is probably pretty close to a candy thermometer so that may be worth a try, and it will also come in handy when cooking homemade potato chips in a dutch oven (yum!).
