depends on what you want to know the temperature of and what kind of thermometer you have. If you have the traditional type and want to know what the water temp is, you need to put the thermometer inside the tank, in the water, away from the heater. If it’s one of the strip kind it should go on the outside of the tank and will give the temp of the glass based on the water temp.

If it’s a thermometer with mercury in it that raises a red bar to the temperature, then place it on the inside of the tank.
If it is the kind that sticks to the aquarium and lights up a temperature, then stick it on the outside of the tank.
if you want to no the temperature of the water put it in the tank. i have mine on the side of mine and it is doing fine.
Put it in the water on the opposite side of your tank as the heater.
As far away from the heater as you can. You will get a more accurate reading
in the water how is it going to work out of the water
the ones that come with starter kits are little black strips that you stick on the oustide of the tank.
