Question by anne marie c: If you put a thermometer in outer space, what would it read?
temperature is determined with air pressure. Because there is no air pressure in outer space (no air molecules), what would a thermometer say?

    Best answer:

    Answer by davehuckleberry_55
The temperature in outer space is 2.745K which is just above the lowest temperature possible of 0K or absolute zero. This temperature in outer space is the result of the radiation that permeates out entire Universe and is left over from the ‘Big Bang’. Temperature is not determined by air pressure in outer space.

Question by Viv: explain how the common thermometer works by expansion what expands?
explain how the common thermometer works by expansion what expands, and how does that expansion indicate the temperature?

        Best answer:

        Answer by trollfest
Thermometers contain a liquid that expands in response to increases in temperature, used to be mercury but now usually alcohol. The liquid is contained within a tube inside the thermometer and as it expands it moves up the tube. On the tube there are markings to indicate what the temperature must be in order for the liquid to have expanded to reach that level.

I don’t know but if it is for fertility issues you should look up Babycomp and/or LadyComp… both expensive, but work great. They are basal thermometers with computers in them that predict your fertile times with amazing accuracy…

Question by xosonia:): What can you subsitute for a candy thermometer when making maple candy?

            Best answer:

            Answer by KK
I don’t think you can really substitute for a thermometer to find the exact Temperature, but usually your recipe will describe what the candy should look like when it is completed. Making candy is a delicate process, it is really easy to burn as candy is mostly sugar. I would head out and purchase a thermometer.

Question by momtuysk: in an alcohol thermometer, the height of a constant amount of liquid alcohol in a thin glass tube increases or?
In an alcohol thermometer, the height of a constant amount of liquid alcohol in a thin glass tube increases or decreases as temperature changes. Using the kinetic theory, explain the behavior of the alcohol using the following terms : lose energy, gain evergy, volume(or space), movement, molecules(or particles)

                  Please help me :)

                  Best answer:

                  Answer by cstspeedy
As the temperature increases, the individual alcohol molecues gain kinetic energy, moving faster. Moving faster, these particles take up more space and so the volume of the fluid increases. When the temperature decreases, the reverse happens; less movement of particles with lower energy means that there is less space between particles and the overall volume decreases.

Note: it is the spaces between the partices/molecules which changes, NOT the size of the particles themselves.
