Question by hotpocketpoo: Why can’t a clinical thermometer measure high temperatures while a laboratory thermometer can?
They’re both filled with mercury, so they should be able to measure the same range right.
Best answer:
Answer by billrussell42 It’s all in what the thermometer was designed to measure, which involves the amount of liquid (mercury is no longer used), the length of the tube, the diameter of the tube, and the expansion coefficient of the liquid.
There is no need for a clinical thermometer to measure high temperatures, so it was not designed to. In practice, this means the tube is shorter, and thinner. The thinner tube gets you more accurate readings as the liquid moves more per degree change.

Question by apryle: what do you use besides a rectal thermometer to take an infants temperature?
i am freaked out by the idea of taking a rectal temp. i know it’s most accurate but i know there are a few other things out there like a forehead one and the ear one. but i have heard they aren’t accurate. is there one or brand that u use that u love and get an accurate reading?

Answer by snowlilly23 I take her temperature under her arm just with the thermometer the hospital gave me.
Question by bomb_21_au: What thermometer do you use for your baby?
I need to get a good one. I am tired of holding that thing under his arm. Takes forever and he gets ticked off. So I would like to get one that reads quick. Do any of you use one? If so which one? Provide a link if possible. Thanks!

Question by Servant of الله: how much does it cost to get a thermometer installed in my car?
i don’t want any of those cheap walmart brand car thermometers i want the real kind like some cars come with, how much would this cost?
Best answer:
Answer by Smilin’ Jack They’re all pretty much the same.
Call Wal-Mart and ask them how much.
Then call an auto repair shop and ask them.
You can figure it out for yourself.
Question by onecharliecat: How can I tell my water is right temp for making bread in machine if I don’t have thermometer?
It keeps sinking in the middle when baking. Is the water too hot or cold? It is warm on my wrist. Any suggestions? Thanks ahead of time.
Question by Ron Allen: Is there such a thing as a consumer grade thermometer that will record hourly temperature throughout the day?
An outdoor weather thermometer to be specific.
Best answer:
Answer by thenetsurfer I heard of food grade thermometers, but not consumer ones.
Question by enzyme304: The thermometer gauge in my car shows i am low on heat. What should I do if I run out of heat?
I try to take care of my vehicle. I always rotate the air in the tires when I am supposed to. I always put a new sticker on the windshield when it is time to change the oil sticker. And, I always add fresh air to the air filter.

Answer by Chris_Knows You need an O-Pipe exhaust…If you add backpressure, it will create heat…otherwise you’ll need to get a new engine…Also, make sure you’re not low on blinker fluid.
Question by WhatFeck: Why does the resistance increase with temperature when using a Platinum Resistance Thermometer?
Also, why is there an inverse relationship for thermocouples?
Best answer:
Answer by Ecko A platinum Resistance thermometer is just a long thin wire, arranged so there is no physical stress with temperature change. Increasing the temperature of most materials causes them to have an increased resistance. The exceptions are carbon and semiconductors. Why? There are several mechanisms present in a material for changing resistance with temperature, and the ones that cause an increase dominates in most materials. The increase is close to linear, but not quite. It can be corrected mathematically. These sensors are used because they are highly predictable and stable. The resistance change is the same as copper wire, but more predictable and stable.
Thermocouples generate voltage at the junction of a hot and a cold point, not changing resistance particularly.
Perhaps you meant thermistors. These are a semiconductor, but there are types with positive and negative temperature coefficient. They have a significantly non linear response with a known characteristic, but coefficients have to be determined. Thermistors are used as they are the most sensitive temperature sensors within a range. The material they are made of is a ferrous oxide, something like rust.
The link below has more details, including the interaction between electrons and phonons (heat photons). See the paragraph on temperature dependence.
