Question by sheri: With an oral thermometer, is your temperature different depending on where you place it in the mouth?
When I shove it back by my back teeth, it is rather high, but when I put it on the side or under the front of the tongue, it is always a different number! Please advise, what is the accurate place to put the thermometer? Thank you.

Answer by PedsRN
under the tongue, toward the back. this is warmest spot due to blood vessel locations. Also, breathing and drinking cool most of your mouth, so as central as possible(under tongue, far back) is more accurate.

      Question by Reader: Why is the mercury split in a U-shaped thermometer?
      I bought the thermometer some 30 years ago and placed it in my office. Last week I noticed each end of the mercury was split and thought it might be impossible to join them. Any ideas?

      A straight thermometer capillary is in vacuum. You have a max-min thermometer? That is gas-loaded. Either way, mercury column breakage is not uncommon. Four tactics to reunite it

      1) (Not good for max-min.) Cool the mercury until it is all in the bulb, then warm slowly. Mercury freezes at -38 C. Solidfied mercury in the bulb may burst it as it expands and warms.

      2) Warm the bulb until the gap is in the top bulb. NOT recommended. You can burst the thermometer or ruin its calibration.

      3) Whip the thermometer at the end of your arm, bottom of U downward This will snap a straight thermometer (bad thing!) unless it is in a padded case **whose bottom will not fail.** Whirling a max-min on a rope with the U outward might do it. Tie a good fastening. Do it outside, on grass.

      4) Utrasonicate it. It could get much worse, bringing you back to (3).

        Question by plumdumplings: Who makes a really good instant read thermometer?
        It can be analog or digital, but it needs to be sturdy, accurate and INSTANT. Had the most frustrating time cooking this past weekend. Had a pheasant in the oven (1st time for me with pheasant – it was awesome) and my “instant” read thermometer took so long each time we checked the bird’s temperature that you knew the oven temperature was dropping like crazy every time.

        It will almost 100% be used to check temperature of meat – indoors and on the grill. Don’t want something that stays in.

        Please, please, please – anyone with experience with a terrific thermometer, let me know. Otherwise I am perfectly capable of searching Amazon, eBay and Sur la Table myself (which is where I started – got very overwhelmed – and decided to try here).

        Thanks!!
        Hi Corvato – that was the first thing I looked at (seems a lot easier than constantly probing your food and answered the problem of letting the heat out of the oven), but then I thought that though it would be great for meat/poultry in the oven, it would be really awkward for the grill where you are moving and turning meat around. Do you know – if you take the thermometer out to do some major flipping of the food, when you put it back in – will it be instant read? Have you grilled with one?

          Q&A: Algebra II absolute value help?

          Question by TannerRyan.: Algebra II absolute value help?
          A meat thermometer is used to assure that a safe temperature has been reached to destroy bacteria. Most meat thermometers are accurate to within plus or minus 2 degrees F.

          1. The ham you are baking needs to reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees F. If the thermometer reads 160 degrees F, write an equation to determine the least and greatest temperature of the meet.

          2. To what temperature reading should you bake a ham to ensure that the minimum internal temperature is reached? Explain.

          Any help is greatly appreciated, I understand the rest of my homework, these two just stumped me though.

          Answer by iron_composite
          1) T = x +/- 2; where x = thermometer, T = actual temperature
          With given information, T = 160 +/- 2

          2) If min(T) >= 160,
          Then 160 = x +/- 2; use the smaller case since we are interested in the minimum T
          160 = x – 2
          x = 162

              Q&A: Are my pork tips cooked?

              Question by nutail12: Are my pork tips cooked?
              I just cooked some pork tips in the oven @ 400 F, which was properly pre-heated.

              They were probably in there for an hour, I was multitasking. I would think40 mins. would be enough. The temperature, which was taken at the thickest part of the meat at a depth of 1.5 to 2 inches, read to be around 175-180 F. Well, I found pink near the bone. Shouldn’t the bone be hot, I know your suppose to avoid contact of the bone with the thermometer to eliminate false readings, since the bone is usually hotter.

              What did I do wrong?
              BTW, the marrow of the bone was starting to burn and the fluids were clear.
              It is an actual cut of meat look for it in the meat sections. I is like like pork steak.
              they only like an inch to two inches widest part. They can’t be more than 6 ozs. each. I cut them up so I cam put them in small bags so I can cook a little bit at a time since it is only me.

              I it enough for porks chops I know that for sure. My parents have made them before.

                Q&A: What are Your Cat’s Quirky Habits?

                Question by Shyamala: What are Your Cat’s Quirky Habits?
                I would like to know the wacky habits of your cats. Mine for example, The Evil One is in LOVE with plastic Bags, and also enjoys knocking things off table tops. Tap, tap, and on the floor it goes. Oh and he steals the meat thermometer, we find it days later behind the couch, or the toilet.

                Evil Too however likes to sit at the window sill and make this scratchy pathetic attempt at a meow. I only assume he is trying to verbally assault the bypassing birds, but I just feel sorry for him.

                Princess Puca is SPOILED. I have never met another cat who whines all the time. It’s these high pitch meows, when I don’t look at her, when I am not petting her, when she doesn’t know where I am, or my favorite, when she is bored. so basically ALL the time. She’s the spolied baby!

                Well I would love to hear about yours!

                My cat Caramelo has adopted one of my daughter’s BARBIE dolls. She sleeps with her, licks her and plays with her. She carries the doll around the house as it was a kitten. It is very funny. And if you take the doll from her she gets very upset and cries.

                    This is a very simple and basic way to make it. You can also stick potatoes, onions and carrots around the roast. I normally pour red wine around it as well – it brings out flavor in the meat and makes a great gravy. I know it says you need a meat thermometer, they’re helpful but not necessary. Cut into the meat to see if it’s done. http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/roast_beef/
