Question by dances with unicorns: What is the best kind of thermometer to measure the temperature of the hot water at my tap?
I need to know what kind of thermometer will give me the best measurement of temperature of the water from my hot water heater, and where I’d find one. The electric water heater in my apartment doesn’t seem to perform too well; in my city, the maxiumum temperature for a hot water heater is 120F, and I want to see what mine is producing.

    Thanks!

Well, I don’t know how you call it in your country but there are certain types of laboratory thermometers usually available at drugstores. Those kinds are for students experiments use, and they are cheaper compared to industrial grade ones. Don’t use your ordinary clinical thermometer (for sick persons) because it only has small limits to its gauge. I’ve tried one time years ago… it bursted.

which is the most accurate means of measuring the temperture of liquids?

Question by sagara: which is the most accurate means of measuring the temperture of liquids?
i have precisely measured liquids, dilluted chemicals in equally shaped and volume containers.

i dont have access to specializied scientific equipment. i am thinking that my choices are either, a infrared thermometer or a weather themometer.

which gives more accurate temperture readings for my situtation. please be elaborate in your suggestions and instructions. one concern i have for this scenerio is that the surface temperture of the liquid will not neccessarily be homogenizied with the rest of the liquid. Can i overcome this by taking multiple readings? Aggitation? Mixing?
the chemicals im measuring are used in photodevlopment. i hope to experiment with a variety of tempertures to see what devlopes the most aethetically pleasing results.

Most electronic thermometers at pretty accurate…although if you do not have one on hand…mercury thermometers are best, because they can go to temperatures of -40 before freezing.

I know, I should go to school, yadayada, this isn’t for school, this is for the weekend. I don’t want to go on a trip with my step-father.

I’ve been feeling really tired so I don’t really have to fake feeling bad, but my mom doesn’t want to let me stay home from the trip without a fever, and she uses the ear thermometer, digital. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fake the digital ear thermometer while being watched take my temperature?

Question by Meilien: Non paranormal explanations for “cold spot” in room?
There is a regular ordinary room. It used to be a bedroom but is now a family den.

For some inexplicable reason there is a section of the room that is 2 deg C colder than the rest of the room. The cold section is the exact size and shape of the bed that used to stand there (There’s a book shelf and a gaming chair there now). If you move a thermometer (digital, or mercury) into the cold sport it will drop in front of your eyes, but if you move it an inch to the side (outside of the cold section) it will go back up again.

If you use a thermal imaging camera (Local hardware store that rents them out for nighttime wildlife tours) you can see the cold spot clearly. And it’s the size and shape of the bed that use to be there.

The wall behind it is an internal wall that backs on to a heated room, and it’s not cold to the touch. A smoke candle shows that there are no droughts in the room (The windows are double glazed and sealed, there is no AC and no vents of any kind).

The cold spot is in direct sunlight a lot as it’s south facing.

The floor under the cold spot feels the same tempreature as the floor in the rest of the room (It’s shag carpet). There is a heated kitchen under it, the same as the rest of the room (No cold spots on kitchen ceiling or in kitchen). There is no crawl space under the floor, and no cold water pipes or anything that might cool the room down.

Strangely, an infrared thermometer doesn’t register the cold spot at all, it just reads the wall behind it (which is normal tempreature). But it does register that anything put inside the cold spot is about 2 deg C colder than when the object is outside of the cold spot.

I’m familiar with the paranormal explanations (I’ve never seen a ghost, and I think that the supposed hauntings that you see on TV bunk) but what are some non paranormal explanations?

Nothing “bad” ever happed in the room. Nobody ever died in it or anything. The house is a new build, less than 5 years old and nobody else ever lived there before. The bed was new, too. It’s now in another room, and it seems perfectly normal. No cold spots or anything. The land that the house was built on is perfectly ordinary land. It’s not Indian land, or anything like that. Before the house was built it was just scrub land. And there is no record of anything “bad” having happened there.

Spot has remained cold for the last 3 months, ever since the bed was moved. The tempreature difference between it and the rest for the room is constant day and night, summer and winter.
Moving the bed back does nothing. Still cold.
How is it even possible to use a mercury thermometer incorrectly? You put it in the cold area and watch the level drop, you move it out and watch it rise.

Same for a thermal imaging camera designed for tourists. There’s an on/off button and a zoom control. That’s it.

You know – I’ve been looking into this for some time – the physics of what people think is ghosts or the paranormal – I have an idea that there is a quantum mechanical explanation for the kind of thing that you are describing though I don’t know how it works. It maybe that somehow the environment is able to “remember” energy of an object that has been there – rather like how a videotape plays back video – this makes more sense to me than “ghosts” or the paranormal – see below

Question by SweetDreams28: how does a meat thermometer work and where can i find a labeled diagram of it?

    Best answer:

    Answer by anoldmick
Oh, it’s very simple to use. You actually stick the pointy end of it into your meat and read the temperature on the gauge on the other end. You can even buy digital ones – but the oldfashioned ones that use a dial with a pointer are cheaper and just as easy to use. All the instruction you need will be printed on the package the item comes in.

Question by Candypants: Where should the thermometer be in relation to the heater in a 25 gallon tank?
Hi! I have a 25 gallon aquarium with a heater. I was wondering where is the best best spot to place the thermometer? Currently, the heater is at one end of the tank along the back wall (as that is the only place it will fit with the hood) and the thermometer is at the same end, but on the front wall. Am I just measuring the temperature at that end of the tank, and the other end could be cooler, or is the heat probably the same throughout? Thanks!

    Best answer:

    Answer by dennis
the temp will remain the same throughout your tank any where you place the thermometer is good pick a spot where its easy to read
